Improving Your Mountain Biking Safety

Proper care and precautionary measures are always two of the best ways to ensure your safety when participating in any sport. This matter is heightened when participating in an extreme sport such as mountain biking. There are numerous ways that you can improve your safety.  Many riders will tell you that wearing a helmet is the most important step, with the second being to always ride in control of your bike.

When you have control you’ll not only prevent crashes, but help keep others on the trail safe as well.  Riding out of control diminishes your ability to adjust to the terrain as you ride over it.  This can and usually does result in serious injury to yourself and others.

Following these helpful guidelines will improve your safety when riding your mountain bike.

Having the proper gear is the first step to ensuring safety. Always make sure to wear a helmet and other necessary safety gear for the conditions that you plan to ride in.

Never ride beyond your control

Never let someone put you down for walking the areas of the trail that you don’t feel comfortable riding through. There is never any shame in putting your safety and wellbeing first; you should never let anyone else tell you that there is.

Keep your speed under control

Your speed should be kept at a level where you are capable of quickly adjusting to any obstacles or changes in the trail.

Knowing your trail

If you are pursuing an unfamiliar trail, you should never push the limits. Start off with at slow speeds until you learn it better.

Slow down around blind corners

If you can’t see past a corner you should always slow down, as you never know who or what is around it.

Start small then go big

As with anything in life, the best way to learn is to start small and work your way up.  Stunts and obstacles are no different.  Begin by practicing in less difficult or dangerous situations before you move up to something more dangerous.

Playing it smart

Always think about what you are doing and go with your instincts. If you find yourself questioning your actions, you may not need to be doing it.
